I was just having a look through my blog and realised that the last time I wrote about my girls was this time last year, whoah! It's safe to say that they have changed a lot in this last year. Clementine turned 4 earlier this month and Hazel is now 19 months old. We are officially out of the baby bubble! Although we still call Hazel "the baby" and she's tiny, so I can get away with pretending she's still a baby for a while longer...
Read MoreI decided last year that I really wanted to start photographing weddings. The idea terrified me but I didn't want to let that stop me, so I made it my goal to start second shooting in 2017. So earlier this year, when I got a message from my friend Liv that her friend was looking for a wedding photographer and would I be interested, I practically shouted at her, "YES!"
She put me in touch with Chrissy, and I connected with her and her fiancé from the first moment I met them, bonding over Anne of Green Gables, yoga and the joys and stresses of wedding planning. I knew right away that their wedding would be something special, and I was honoured that they would trust me to capture it.
Read MoreMy mom arrived from Vancouver on Thursday morning, just in time for a four-day Easter long weekend. It was perfect. After weeks of rain, we're finally being treated to some glorious autumn weather. Bright, sunny days warm enough to wear dresses and sandals, and early, crisp nights, cool enough for an extra layer on the bed.
Read MoreThe end of pregnancy is such a special time. You're on the cusp of a huge change, and it's this balancing act between excitement for the future and enjoyment of the present. My friend Liv is in that place now, due to have her first baby very soon. You can just feel how ready and how excited Liv and Dave are to become parents, and also how much they're relishing this time beforehand. And one day very soon, I'll get the call and I'll make my way over to their place to meet their daughter and take newborn photos. Can't wait!
Read MoreAs promised, here is part 2 from my photoshoot with Egg of the Universe Yoga. These yogis are each so unique and inspiring, and working with them individually and as a group was amazing. If you live in Sydney, or you ever visit Sydney, you should definitely try to get to their classes (look for Bryony, Kate, Sarah and Aimee on the timetable). And if you're after your very own yoga photos, shoot me an email at info@gabrielafearn.com.au!
Read MoreAs promised, today's post is a follow up to my post on how to organise your personal photos. Keeping my photos organised makes all of my memory keeping projects way easier, so it made sense to start there and now I'll explain how I use my photos.
To begin, I got the idea from Ronnie to decide on my personal memory keeping framework. Figuring out your priorities and then deciding on a framework is a helpful exercise before committing to a bunch of projects that you may or may not be able to keep up with.
After mulling it over, I decided to break down my projects into 3 categories: photos, words and videos.
Read MoreIf you used to read my old blog, you'll know that I'm an avid crafter. I love to make things, whether it's knitting, sewing, quilting, embroidering, crocheting or weaving. I go through phases with my crafting, spending months on one craft and then swapping to another. I have found that since becoming a parent to two, knitting has been my go to craft. It's way more portable than sewing and easy to pick up and knit a row or 2 if I find myself with 5 free minutes.
Read MoreEgg of the Universe Yoga Studio and Wholefoods Cafe is an absolutely magical place. It's like a little oasis in the big city; you can go to a yoga class that's sure to leave you feeling happy and centred, and then enjoy a wholesome meal while sitting under the elm tree. What's not to love?
Read MoreI am super excited about today's post! If you read my post on organising your personal photos, you'll know that I'm passionate about memory keeping. I joke that our house is like a shrine to ourselves because we have so many of our family photos displayed. I love being surrounded by memories of the most special milestones in our life, from getting married eight (!) years ago to bringing our eldest to the hospital to meet her new sister. I really don't think you can have too many photos on your walls, and some experts even say that family photos boost your child's self esteem and enhance their feeling of belonging.
Read MoreI recently had the pleasure of attending Sarah Owen's Yin Yoga Teacher Training. Over the course of 3 weekends I learned so much; Sarah truly is a wealth of knowledge.
Shortly thereafter we got together to do another photoshoot (you can our first photoshoot here). Sarah brought along several props and set up a beautiful floral background; I just love the extra dimension they add to her photos. Here are some of my favourites...
Read MoreI'm a big believer in family photos, for my clients and for myself. I take tons of photos and I also make it a priority to have family photos done once or twice a year.
I treasure these photos more than I can say, and because of that, I'm determined to fully enjoy them. This means figuring out a system for organising our photos and memory keeping projects, and actually sticking with it! I'll be publishing a separate post about memory keeping, and for now will stick with an explanation of how I deal with photos. I know that many of us are overwhelmed by our digital photos, and it might even be one of your New Year's resolutions to get on top of it. I hope that a peek into my process might help you find a system that works for you!
Read MoreMeet Vanessa: she's one of my oldest friends and the person I originally travelled to Australia with. When she told me that she was pregnant, I was so excited for her. And then when she had her first scan and found out she was expecting twins, I was shocked and even more excited for her! Having twins isn't easy, but Vanessa and her husband are doing so well dealing with the sleep deprivation and curveballs that are being thrown their way (says the girl who could barely cope with the sleep deprivation of having 1 baby at a time, ahem). I love you Nessa and I'm so proud of you!
Read MoreThis is a story about a Christmas tree and a bathtub...
For the 8+ years that I've lived in Sydney, I have always struggled with Christmas. It's a sentiment that most Northern Hemisphere expats seem to share; celebrating Christmas in the middle of summer is just weird. So every year when December comes around, I'm a bit of a Scrooge. There's also the fact that Christmas Day happens to be my birthday, which adds to the pressure around the day.
Read MoreIf you follow me on Instagram, then you already know that Clementine recently got her cast taken off after a long 6.5 weeks. October was a pretty crazy month for us; we had just gotten back from Canada, we were jet lagged and busy, and on our fifth day back, Clementine fell off our kitchen counter and broke her elbow. I had been putting Hazel to bed, and when I came out and saw her face I knew that something was seriously wrong. My husband was already packing a bag and he just looked up at me and said, "I'm taking her to the hospital."
Read MoreOver the last couple of years, I've had the privilege of photographing many different yoga teachers. After working with both men and women, new and advanced practitioners, in studios and at outdoor locations, I've picked up a few tips that I thought might be helpful to anyone who is preparing for a yoga photoshoot. So here they are, my top tips to get the most out of your experience:
Read MoreI recently had the chance to do a quick mini session with Bryony, Co-Director of Egg of the Universe Yoga studio and wholefoods café in Rozelle. Bryony needed a photo for a feature in a new yoga magazine, and as always, I was very excited to walk into a newsagent and see one of my photos in print!
Read MoreWay back in the day, on my very first trip to Sydney, I found a yoga studio that I loved. I started practising there most weekdays, and Cath was one of my first teachers. I hadn't seen her in quite a while so it was lovely to have the chance to catch up and take photos of her in this beautiful, light-filled studio.
Read MoreI've known this lovely mum since she was pregnant with her little boy and started coming to my prenatal yoga classes. Both of our pregnancies overlapped and I always loved chatting with her about all things pregnancy, birth, and babies.
